Yooper Lore
The U.P. – a beautiful place made unique by the climate and by those who thrive in it. With more people than deer and harsh winters with record snow fall, native Yoopers have learned to deal with and enjoy the outdoors in extreme conditions. This way of life has evolved into an interesting culture that we would like to share with you. Watch for stories, recipes and news from the good ol’ U.P.

In 1975, my husband Max and I took a two week camping honeymoon trip from northern Illinois up thru the U.P.. We had a wonderful time. Everyone in the U.P. was soo nice. Our eldest granddaughter did five years at N.M.U. getting two degrees. She had a great time. We miss ” THE YOOPERS”. We saw them do a great show in Monroe, Wis..

My family LOVES the UP ! My wife is originally from Gwinn, and was born in Ishpeming. We make it up there at least twice a year, one of those being deer season, we all hunt near Northland, and Cornell. We love it there and would love to retire there. SAY YA to the UP !!

The life I live now in s.w. Ohio is so tame compared to the excitement & dangers of growing up only 3 miles west of “down town Rock.” Dad worked for K&K, Mom became a U.P. “Rock star” when she put on her “Maudie’s Country Music” show. As a senior in High School I was signed up to join the US Navy after graduation. My friends & I would camp near the Escanaba River every chance we could. We would hunt & fish drink what ever alcohol we could get away with buying at the party stores that didn’t check I D.’s. We carried our hunting knives on our belts in school and every place we went. Our guns tossed in the back seat so we could get right to hunting as soon as the final school bell rang. Those are cherrished memories & I get to relive them each and every time I happen to find a business advertisment that wasn’t around when I was growing up. I get excited for that place to “make it,” enjoy my U.P. I hope to get up there for a visit again soon, maybe I’ll get a chance to check you out on my next visit to the past.
